If you ever tried diamond pads, you will know how they're better than the conventional floor pads:

But better performance originates from better materials and technology. Generally speaking, most floor pads will employ the Silicon Carbide particles and diamond pads will use diamond particles.
Why are diamond polishing pads are more expensive?
1. Speaking of diamonds, people immediately think of the sparkling gem-quality diamond in Figure 1. It is actually a natural or synthetic diamond that has been artificially polished.
The industrial-grade diamond is shown in Figure 2 for coarse-grit diamonds and Figure 3 for fine-grained diamonds.
Figure 4 is a schematic diagram of the atomic structure of diamond: a cubic crystal structure composed entirely of carbon atoms. In a diamond crystal, each carbon atom forms a covalent bond with the other 4 carbon atoms via SP3 hybrid orbital to form a regular tetrahedron. Due to the strong C-C bond in diamond, the hardness of diamond is high. Diamond is the hardest substance in nature, and its Mohs hardness is 10.
2. Ordinary abrasive silicon carbide is shown in Figure 5 for black silicon carbide. Figure 6 shows that the cubic crystal structure of silicon carbide belongs to the zincblende structure, which is very similar to but different from the structure of diamond. The difference is that the atoms on the two face-centered cubic lattices that make up the zinc blende structure are of different kinds, while the atoms that make up the diamond structure are of the same kind. Figure 7 shows the hexagonal structure of silicon carbide.
3. The atomic structure determines the physical properties, so diamond is the hardest substance in nature, with a Mohs hardness of 10 (Supplementary note: now the laboratory has made C60 hardness more than diamond, we will produce C60 polishing sheet in the future), diamond The microhardness is about 90000MPa;
The Mohs hardness of silicon carbide is about 9-9.5, and the microhardness is about 30000MP.
The Mohs hardness and microhardness of diamond are much higher than that of silicon carbide, which is the fundamental reason why the sharpness of diamond grinding discs (polishing discs) is much higher than that of silicon carbide grinding discs.
4. Price:
Silicon carbide: $2194.5/ton = $2.19/kg.(Currency:1 Dollar = 6.8353 RMB)
Diamond: $0.029/carat = $0.1463/g = $146.3/kg = $146300/ton
Compare the cost difference of raw materials! 146300/2194.5=66.6 times!
But even expensive, but the diamond particles can bring out better cleaning and polishing result by less resource consumption. When we speaking of something expensive, it's better to consider the OVERALL COST or LONG-TERM COST not the price of the products themselves. See the price only, you will lose much, see the values behind, you will win more.
