How pad base work on the performance of diamond polishing pads?
Jan 29 , 2023

During the past days, we were upgrading our tech and performance on dry burnishing and wet polishing. By learning a lot about conventional fiber floor pads, we decided to explore new possibilities of the diamond polishing pad. And we luckily found that even the same tech formula can perform at different levels due to the different structures and materials of the pad base.

Fiber Floor Pads

As usual, a fiber floor pad will consume the binder, resins, polyester fibers and sometimes with some abrasives like mineral abrasive particles. But for various applications, they may employ different structures. Some pads are open textured nonwoven structure but the others are compact structure containing high density of fibers, binders and resins.

Structure of the Pad Base

As a result, the open structure is good for floor daily cleaning or polishing/waxing with chemical polisher. Besides, it's better for coated floors like stone floors or PVC or VCT floors. For concrete and other hard floors, the compact structure is better choice. They can well do stripping, deep cleaning or high-speed buffing or burnishing jobs.

Different Pad Bases

Based on this, EZshine tries different pad bases. Here is four samples with no any abrasives:

Sample A, open structure, much binders, less polyester fibers, hard resins and much natural bristles

Sample B, same with A but with soft resins and less natural bristles

Sample C, open structure, less binders, much polyester fibers, soft resins

Sample D, compact struture, much binders, more polyester fibers, soft resins

As descibed, A is the most ideal for stripping, polishing and burnishing in the case of no abrasives. And C is good for floor daily cleaning but B is in the middle of them. How about if we put some polycrystal diamond particles on?

Test Results

A is good for burnishing and last longer but the base is too hard to flexiblely polish the uneven floor profile. C is good for daily cleaning and polishing but the strure is too weak and lifetime goes faster. B performs very even for gloss, clarity and lifespan but it's not the best. Now D can enhance 20%-40% the clarity and gloss compared with B. But it will lower the aggressiveness of the polishing particles.

We're surprised at this test result since we never consider that the performance has something to do with the pad base, and to such a great extent!

Under several different floors like terrazzo floor, concrete floor, marble floor and granite floor, sample D keeps delivering its "WOW" result on wet polishing and dry burnishing.

No End for A Better Result

Now some clients are invited to help us to explore more possibility on praticle application case and floor. The R&D now focuses on improving the aggressiveness. We're looking for a balance but not 100% the best one. There is nothing is perfect but we're walking in the right way: with the same price to provide better quality and performance.

EZshine is a team who is never satisfied with its quality and performance. We're always exploring new possibilities. And our R&D also has the plan in 2023 to explore a solution for EXCENTR Oscillating machine. (Even we failed many times before...) To avoid the scratches and orange peels on stone polishing, can we make it? We don't know but if you have a problem with the floor care jobs, then we're interested.
